As I look back at this year one can focus on so many things. The Cubs won the World Series, Social Security claiming options underwent dramatic changes, interest rates hit an all-time low before rising dramatically since the election, and many were surprised by the outcomes from November’s election (not just the presidency). The stock market dropped dramatically early in the year and then rallied to new all-time highs in December. We had the British vote to leave the European Union (Brexit) and now several other European countries are considering leaving the Union. There were Olympics in Rio that surprised many by going off without the major catastrophe that many were expecting. All in all, this was a year of extremes.

Stay Focused

Per many pundits, we should expect those kinds of extreme changes to continue into the New Year. Given that scenario, what will be your theme for 2017? I have found having a theme for the year helps me focus on and improve the likelihood of me accomplishing many things in the new year.

\"stay-focused\"Looking Back on 2016

My theme for 2016 was health and fitness. Although I didn’t know how my health would be, I knew that I needed to make it a priority in my life. In late February, I hurt myself in the gym while rehabbing from a year of physical therapy that was due to the shoulder surgery I had in 2014. That began an odyssey of treatment up and down my right side, culminating in a hip replacement at the end of September.

As I finish up the year, I feel healthier, pain free, and energized! It feels like 10 years were taken off my body and I feel better than I have in a long time. Even though there were lots of times I was discouraged, having that theme helped me to get to where I am now. Did you have a theme in 2016? How did it turn out? I would appreciate hearing from you.

Bring on the New Year

So now, as you look forward, what are you seeking from the upcoming year? With so much going on and so much information, misinformation and other distractions coming at us from all directions, this is a particularly good year to have that focus to help us prosper and grow, regardless of what is happening around us.

My 2017 Theme

For 2017, my theme is organization! Between all of the items that compete for my attention; emails, texts, voice mails, calls, and mail, there are a lot of things that seem to go by the wayside. Magazines I haven’t read, my “junk drawer” at home is full, there is so much in our “bonus room” that it is hard to tell it is a room at all! My back yard is a mess and there are a list of projects here at work that I really want to do in order to improve our service and what we provide to our clients. I don’t know if you have ever felt this way, but having those things hanging over my head is a lot of stress and anxiety; two things I don’t want in my life. So as I take the time to do my annual planning for both home and work, having that theme will help me make plans to deal with those issues. Heck, I feel better already!

Now It’s Your Turn

I would encourage you to take a few minutes to reflect on how this year went and what you would like to receive from the upcoming year. Then see if you can define your own “theme for 2017.” Once you have it in mind then write it down. That makes it real. Even better, share it with someone you respect and trust, this will help make you accountable. Give it a try, I think you will like the results.
